Day 6 of the Utah BDR travels through Utah’s uranium country — from Dewey Bridge and Yellow Cat Mine to Sego Ghost Town and the Book Cliffs. This stretch of the route blends Cold War mining history with remote desert overlanding, ending near Big Hole Wash north of Green River.

The second half of Day 5 on the Utah Backcountry Discovery Route carried us from Moab’s Porcupine Rim to the Colorado River — across the Kokopelli Trail, past dinosaur tracks in Bull Canyon, and down the winding crossings of Onion Creek Canyon. We ended the day at Dewey Bridge, camped where the Dolores meets the Colorado beneath red canyon walls.

On Day 5 of the Utah BDR, we left Moab and climbed straight into one of the world’s most famous off-road trails — Hell’s Revenge. From the first sandstone fin to the long, technical exit, this trail delivered everything Moab is known for: unreal traction, steep slickrock, and incredible views. Our Utah BDR adventure begins with two days that span the full spectrum of the Southwest — from Phoenix pines to Utah’s red rock canyons. We cross the Navajo Nation and Monument Valley, camp beneath the Seven Sailors in Valley of the Gods, climb the iconic Moki Dugway, and follow the historic Emigrant Trail once forged by the Hole-in-the-Rock pioneers. By dusk, we roll into Blanding — dusty, tired, and completely in awe of the land we’ve crossed.

I took the Jeep out for a run to Sheep Bridge, just north of Cave Creek, Arizona. It’s a spot tucked away along the Verde River that’s been on my list for a while.

linked up with the Offroad Overland Camping crew for a three-night overlanding trip across the southern Nevada desert. Ron Channels led the run, joined by Rob, Mark, Mimi, James, another Mark, newcomers Bob and Carla, and me making the drive in from Phoenix. The plan was to explore Nelson Ghost Town, tackle Copper Cache and the Nelson Loop trails, and finish out on the Mojave Trail with a camp in the New York Mountains.
